Department for Energy Security & Net Zero: IETF Project Mapping Dashboard

What was DESNZ’s challenge?

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), in partnership with Innovate UK, needed a smart, scalable solution to showcase the impact of the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF). With millions in grant funding allocated to decarbonisation projects across the UK, they wanted a visually engaging and interactive platform to:

  • Bring funded projects to life for the public and stakeholders
  • Inspire new applicants by sharing success stories
  • Enable policymakers to explore data by industry, region, and technology
  • Promote transparency, trust, and innovation

This needed to be delivered via Tableau Public, seamlessly integrated with the GOV.UK platform, and easy for internal teams to update and manage independently.

What we did

We designed, built, and deployed a bespoke Tableau dashboard that transforms static data into an engaging digital experience. Here’s how we delivered value:

  • Custom-built interactive dashboard – A clean, intuitive map interface lets users explore projects across the UK, complete with colour-coded pins, project filters, and rich tooltips detailing grant amounts, technologies, partners, and more.
  • Smart data structuring – We streamlined the Excel data source into a Tableau-ready format, using only essential fields and ensuring seamless visualisation.
  • Public-sector integration – Hosted on Tableau Public and embedded on GOV.UK, we ensured the dashboard met public accessibility standards and government publishing requirements.
  • Handover and training – Delivered a comprehensive handover pack and video walkthrough, enabling DESNZ teams to confidently update, maintain, and evolve the dashboard without external support.
